Remarks at the Farewell Reception
2013-07-03 00:45

Hon. State Controller John Chiang,

Hon. L.A. County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich,

Hon. City Councilmember Tom LaBonge

Hon. members of the consular corps,

Leaders of the Chinese community,

Dear friends, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good evening! Thank you for attending my farewell reception, which will be the last major diplomatic event I host as Consul General in Los Angeles. As you know, I will retire from my diplomatic service after I go back to China next month.

My wife and I arrived in L.A. in December, 2010. How time flies! During my assignment, I'm honored to witness the strengthening of pragmatic exchanges and coorperation in all areas between China and the U.S. I am especially happy to note that Los Angeles has been at the forefront in exchanges and coorperation with China.

During my assignment, more than a dozen top Chinese leaders, including President Xi Jinping and former President Hu Jintao, visited Southen California and Hawaii. Earlier this month, President Xi Jinping had a meeting with President Obama at the Annenberg Estate in California. The two heads of state reached a series of important consensus, yielded significantly positive results, pointed out the direction for the future development of China-U.S. relations, as well as opened up a new page of "Trans-Pacific cooperation" between China and the U.S..

In the meanwhile, Governor Jerry Brown of California and Governor Neil Abercrombie of Hawaii, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa of Los Angeles, Congresswowan Judy Chu, Congressman Ed Royce and many other officials and legislators have all travelled to China to strengthen our sub-national cooperation.

Over the past few years, we have been amazed by our cooperation in areas of economy, culture and education. In 2012, the trade between China and the Los Angeles Customs District reached 152.4 billion US Dollars, accounting for 40% of the total trade of Los Angeles Customs District and 30% of China-U.S. trade respectively. Shanghai Disneyland is to open and Hollywood celebrates Chinese lunar new year. The number of students studying in each other's country in recent years has been on the increase, which, I believe, will give an impetus to our friendship and cooperation.

Talking about our achievements, I cannot but pay tribute to the Chinese community in our consular district. Over the years, they have distinguished themselves in this country and have become an increasingly important bridge of friendship between the Chinese and American people. I wish to take this opportunity to extend my heart-felt thanks to you for your contribution to China-U.S. relations.

I have visited many places and made many friends during my tenure of office here. Since the 1980s, I have worked in various Chinese consulates in the U.S. Looking back, what impresses me most is that, no matter how the international situation evolves, the Chinese and American people have always cherished their friendship. I'm fully confident that with our joint efforts, our friendship and cooperation will have a more solid and enduring foundation.

There is a Chinese poem which goes, it's hard to get to know each other and say goodbye. I really can't bear to leave so many friends, but I know all feasts must break up at last. Therefore, I'd like to extend my deepest gratitude to all my friends who have supported myself and the Chinese Consulate in Los Angeles. I hope that you'll continue to render your support to my successor. I'd also like to thank my wife and all my colleagues at the consualte for their help and support.

In conclusion, I wish that China become more prosperous, China-U.S. friendship last forever and all the best for our guests present here tonight.

Thank you!
