Remarks by Spokesperson of the Chinese Consulate General in Los Angeles on Arizona Governor’s Visit to China’s Taiwan Region
2022-08-31 22:30

Q: According to reports, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey arrived in Taiwan on August 30 for a visit. What is the Consulate's comment?

A: We have noted the reports. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated China's solemn position. There is only one China in the world. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. China firmly opposes any official interaction between the US and Taiwan in any form and in any name. We urge the relevant parties in the US to abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-US joint communiqués, stop all forms of official contact with Taiwan and stop sending wrong signals to“Taiwan independence”forces. China will take strong measures to resolutely defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The one-China principle is the political foundation for the establishment and development of diplomatic relations between China and the US. Arizona Governor's visit to Taiwan, which we firmly oppose, is a blatant violation of the one-China principle and goes against the US commitment to maintaining only non-official ties with Taiwan. It has sent wrong signals to the“Taiwan independence”forces and poisoned the good atmosphere of cooperation between China and the State of Arizona.

Sub-national exchanges and cooperation is an important part of China-US relations and requires joint efforts of both sides. We urge the government of Arizona to handle Taiwan-related issues prudently and properly and stop all forms of official interactions with Taiwan to prevent further damage to China-US relations and sub-national cooperation.
