On May 13, 2017, President Xi Jinping met at Diaoyutai State Guesthouse with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras of Greece, who is in China for the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation

Xi Jinping pointed out that the current China-Greece traditional friendship and cooperation continue to grow with new vitality. The political mutual trust between the two countries has been constantly deepened, and bilateral practical cooperation in economic and trade investment and infrastructure construction yield fruitful results. Bilateral people-to-people and cultural exchanges are rich and colorful. The two sides should take the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Greece as an opportunity to create a more bright future for China-Greece comprehensive strategic partnership. China is willing to maintain high-level exchanges with the Greek side, and enhance communication between various departments of the two governments and at all levels. The two sides should promote balanced development of bilateral trade. As important representatives of the Eastern and Western civilization, China and Greece should give full play to their advantages of profound cultural heritage and continue to release the potential in cultural cooperation, and make full use of the new platform of the "Ancient Civilizations Forum" to promote dialogue and exchanges among different civilizations. China and the EU should expand practical cooperation and maintain a free and open multilateral trade system, hoping that the Greek side will continue to make positive contributions to the long-term, healthy and stable development of China-EU relations.

Xi Jinping stressed that the strategy of building Greece into an important international logistics hub conforms to the "Belt and Road" initiative. China and Greece should focus on building Piraeus Port into an important container transit port, a sea and land transport bridgehead, and an international logistics distribution center in the Mediterranean, so as to make it serve as a important fulcrum for China-Europe Land-Sea Express Route and the "Belt and Road" construction, promote bilateral cooperation in infrastructure construction, energy, telecommunication, sea and other areas for concrete and in-depth development, and better benefit the two peoples.

Alexis Tsipras said that China and Greece are two ancient civilizations. Under the new situation, both sides should strive to promote practical cooperation in a wide range of areas including economy, investment, finance, energy, agriculture and new technologies, and well develop the Piraeus Port project. Greece is pleased to participate in the cooperation of the "Belt and Road" construction and believes that the initiative is farsighted and of great significance, which contributes the connectivity of economy, trade, energy, transportation, and internet in Eurasia. Greece is willing to promote cooperation between China and Central and Eastern European countries and EU-China cooperation.
